Glutathione

Picture
Our lives depend on glutathione. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant found in varying concentrations in all human tissue. It functions as a natural detoxifier, protecting cells from the free radicals that would otherwise destroy them. Without glutathione your cells would disintegrate from unrestrained oxidation, your body would have little resistance to bacteria, viruses and cancer, and your liver would deteriorate from the eventual accumulation of toxins.

Although glutathione exists in all tissue, higher amounts are found in the spleen, pancreas, kidneys and lenses of the eye, with the greatest concentration in the brain and liver. When given intravenously, glutathione has been shown to improve the function of both the liver and the brain.

Glutathione is often used for memory enhancement, dementia, multiple sclerosis, neuropathy, liver disease and Parkinson’s disease. As the body ages, glutathione levels decrease. For example,  Glutathione levels in Parkinson's patients have shown to be unusually low.

Glutathione therapy won't cure Parkinson's disease, but by reducing free radicals, it can ease symptoms and help slow the progression of the disease.

Although glutathione oral medication exists, intravenous glutathione therapy is the much more effective way to administer it for treating Parkinson’s disease. One of the biggest benefits associated with IV glutathione therapy is that the amount of medications frequently prescribed for Parkinson's such as Levodopa which have a number of side effects, can often be decreased and sometimes eliminated altogether.

While
Parkinson’s disease is a major target for using glutathione therapy, this treatment has also shown promise for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and other illnesses.

Studies have shown that low glutathione levels predispose people to cancer. Raised glutathione levels can protect cell DNA from damage through the process of detoxifying harmful chemicals and removing them from the body.

Glutathione is preventative, not a treatment for existing cancer. If you have cancer or are on chemotherapy drugs, be sure and let Dr. Luna know; glutathione will not be appropriate.
